Mapleton Transfer Station – Hardstand Renewal & Drainage Upgrade

The Goal

The primary goal of this project was to renew and upgrade the transfer station's hardstand while keeping the facility fully open to the public throughout construction. The upgrade also established permanent drainage and sediment control infrastructure to protect the surrounding environment.

The Challenge

A major constraint of this project was that the hardstand sits directly over a closed landfill, requiring careful control of excavation depths to protect the clay capping layer beneath. Wet weather added further complexity, and our team worked closely with facility staff to keep the transfer station operating safely throughout the works.

The Solution

Our solution centred on a carefully staged earthworks program that kept construction activity separate from public drop-off areas. To protect the closed landfill, we controlled excavation depths and laid a protective geofabric marker layer. We also built new stormwater infrastructure, including a concrete sediment sump and rock-lined swales, before placing and compacting a new gravel hardstand designed for heavy operational traffic.

The Result

Infrex delivered a durable, upgraded hardstand for the Mapleton Transfer Station. The new rock-lined swales and concrete sediment sump provide long-term stormwater management, while the geofabric marker layer protects the closed landfill for years to come. All works were completed safely and handed over to Council on schedule.
